XENIA — OSU Extension Greene County is hosting a series of home food preservation classes on the following dates from 6-8 p.m. at the extension’s office, 100 Fairground Road, Xenia:

  • July 14 – Pressure Canning and Green Beans
  • Aug. 13 – Water Bath Canning and Tomatoes
  • Sept. 10 – Freezing and Drying Fruits and Vegetables
  • Oct. 6 – Once a Month Cooking

Participants will learn how to properly preserve items from their garden. In addition, the presentations will include a hands-on demonstration at each class. Participants will help with the food preservation process and take a sample home.

“These workshops focus on the basics of home canning and preservation and are appropriate for people with all levels of experience,” said Brend Sandman-Stover, 4-H/Family and Consumer Sciences Program Assistant.

“We emphasize the science behind preservation,” said Melanie Hart Family and Consumer Science Educator. “We want everyone who cans or freezes fresh fruits and vegetables to understand why certain procedures must be followed precisely to ensure a high-quality, safe product that they and their family can enjoy.”

The cost for the Home Food Preservation program is $45 per person, per class. Seating is limited, so participants are asked to sign up by one week prior to when the class will be offered by contacting the OSU Extension office at 937-372-9971 ext. 112 or ext. 116 or [email protected] or [email protected].
