FAIRBORN — The Ohio State University Alumni Club of Greene County has announced its scholarship award winners – Greene County high school seniors graduating in the Class of 2016.

Scholarship winners selected include: Robert Borger of Fairborn; Catherine Bennett, Cameron Sloan, Anna Starkey, Rachel Stewart, Samantha Wick of Bellbrook; Madison Fecher, Michaela Santalucia, Emily Subr of Beavercreek.

Each will enter The Ohio State University in August. The local club has also elected officers for the 2016-2017 year.

Each scholarship has a value of $1,000 for a total of $9,000 granted this year. The awards are funded by the dedicated support of Greene County alumni and include John and Cindy Feltz of Fairborn and Eric and Lela Marcus of Beavercreek endowments in addition to the club’s initial endowment fund. The funds from these endowments generate earnings to enable the local club to offer more scholarships for Greene County students.

Scholarships are given to qualifying applicants are interviewed to select the merit-based award winners. Members serving on the Scholarship Interview Committee this year included: Kylie Sobota, Don Kitchen, Ron Stauffer, Larry Lokai, and chairperson Christi Guillmen.

Scholarship recipients and their parents were recently honored at an alumni gathering held in Fairborn. Past scholarship recipients in attendance included: Amatha Farrens of Jamestown, Maggie Wagner of Xenia, and Luke and Kylie Sobota of Beavercreek.

Guest speaker for the event was Paul Keels who has been the “Voice of the Buckeyes” on The Ohio State Buckeyes Radio Sports Network since 1998.

A guest from the OSU campus was Beth Uniacke, Regional Engagement Officer for Southern Ohio, representing the Alumni Association. She welcomed the scholarship winners and wished them well in their upcoming years at OSU.

Larry Lokai of Urbana, known as the Buckeyeman, led everyone in spirited Buckeye cheers. He presented each of the scholarship winners with a handmade Buckeye necklace and a buckeye tree seedling. He also presented a handmade wreath made of Buckeyes to the guest speaker to hang in his office. Club member, Mary Powers crocheted Buckeye bears which were also given to each of the scholarship recipients and Jo Kitchen, a new club member, made Buckeye key chains for the new students.

Don Kitchen of Beavercreek served as master of ceremonies for the evening.

Officers elected for the 2016-2017 year include: Ron Stauffer, president; Don Kitchen, first vice-president; Becky Mann, second vice president; Connie Moser, secretary; and Chuck Moser, treasurer. Board of Governors representatives include: Tom Adinaro, Karen French Balmer, Anita Byler, Rod Byler, Christi Guillmen, Eric Marcus, Russ Mann of Beavercreek; James Root, Bill Buckey and Cindy Feltz of Fairborn; Lynn Bender of Washington Township; and Susan Brainard of Bellbrook. Judy Hobbs of Jamestown will continue to serve as chairperson of publicity; John Feltz as communication chair; John Balmer as photographer; James Root as social chair; Christi Guillmen as scholarship chair; and Tom Adinaro as webmaster.

The evening ended with the singing of Carmen Ohio led by Susan Brainard.

Upcoming activities include an entry in the Fairborn 4th of July Parade and sponsoring an annual Student Send-Off. This year’s Send-Off picnic will be held 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7 at Fairborn Community Park East. All Greene County high school graduates who will enter OSU as new students this fall are invited along with their parents, siblings, and friends. Special guests will include the Buckeyeman, current students available to answer questions, and others to promote
